What to Do If Your Car Key Is Stolen

If your car key is stolen: make the car safe, report the theft to the police and keep the crime reference number, then have the stolen key erased from the car immobiliser so it can never start the vehicle. A locksmith erases it and programs new keys at the car; you will need the V5C logbook and photo ID.

A lost key is an inconvenience. A stolen key is a security problem, because the person holding it may know exactly where the car is parked. That changes the priority: before anything else, the car needs to be made safe, and the stolen key needs to be made useless.

The steps below are in the order that matters. If you have simply mislaid a key with no theft involved, our lost-key guide for non-theft situations is the calmer version of this story.

Step 1 — Make the car safe right now

If the car is somewhere the thief could reach, move it if you safely can — to a locked garage, a well-lit public spot, or a friend driveway. If you cannot move it, consider the practical options: a steering wheel lock as a visible deterrent, and parking it somewhere overlooked rather than isolated.

Do not delay the next steps while perfecting this one. Physical deterrents buy time; erasing the key is what actually solves the problem.

Step 2 — Report the theft to the police

Report a stolen car key to the police, in person, by phone or online, and keep the crime reference number they give you. This creates an official record of the theft, which matters for insurance and for any later dispute about the timeline.

The report does not need to be dramatic — a factual account of what was taken, where and when is enough. Keep the reference number somewhere safe; your insurer and possibly the locksmith will ask for it.

Step 3 — Erase the stolen key from the car

This is the critical technical step, and it is what separates a stolen-key job from a simple replacement. A new key is programmed to the car, and during the same session the stolen key is deleted from the immobiliser memory. After that, the stolen key is just metal and plastic — it cannot start the engine even if the thief is standing next to the car with it.

Note what erasing does not do: it does not change the door locks, so the old blade could still mechanically unlock the doors on some cars. Ask the locksmith about this for your model — on many modern cars the alarm and deadlocking still protect the cabin, but it is worth discussing. Proof of ownership is always required before this work: V5C logbook and photo ID, checked before any equipment comes out.

Step 4 — Tell your insurer

Contact your car insurer and tell them the key was stolen. Whether the policy covers replacement keys, reprogramming or lock changes depends entirely on your cover — some policies include key cover as standard, some offer it as an add-on, and some exclude it. Check your policy documents rather than assuming.

Report the theft promptly even if you are not claiming. Insurers take a dim view of learning about a stolen key only after the car itself disappears. We cover the wider question in our guide to whether car insurance covers lost or stolen keys.

Should you change the locks as well?

Erasing the key from the immobiliser stops anyone driving the car away, which is the main risk. Whether the physical locks also need changing depends on the car and the circumstances — for example, if the thief also took documents showing your address and the car is parked outside your home.

This is a judgement call worth making with the locksmith on the call. For most modern cars with deadlocks and alarms, erasure plus sensible parking is enough. For older cars with simpler locks, a lock change is worth discussing seriously.

Afterwards: get a spare cut

Once the stolen key is erased and you are back on the road, cut a spare and store it sensibly — somewhere the thief never had access to. A household that went through a stolen-key scare with only one key should not go back to having only one key.

Our guide to where to store spare car keys safely covers the practical options, from trusted family to proper key safes.

If the stolen key turns up later

Sometimes a stolen key is recovered — handed in, found by police, or returned. Do not simply start using it again. Once a key has been out of your control, you cannot know whether it was copied, and the safe move is to keep it erased from the car and continue with the replacements.

A recovered key can still serve as a donor for cutting a fresh blade, since the mechanical profile remains valid. But electronically, treat it as compromised: erased means erased, and the peace of mind is worth far more than the saving.

Stolen key action checklist

Keep this order — each step builds on the last:

  • Move the car somewhere safe, or fit a visible deterrent if you cannot move it
  • Report the theft to the police and save the crime reference number
  • Have the stolen key erased from the immobiliser and new keys programmed
  • Tell your insurer promptly, even if you are not making a claim
  • Discuss with the locksmith whether the door locks need changing for your model
  • Cut a spare and store it somewhere the thief never had access to

Frequently asked questions

Can someone steal my car with my stolen key?

They can unlock it and, before the key is erased, start it. That is why erasing the stolen key from the immobiliser is the urgent step, not just getting a new key cut.

Does erasing the key stop it opening the doors?

Erasure stops the engine starting. The old blade may still turn the door locks mechanically on some cars, so discuss lock changes with the locksmith for your model.

Should I call the police about a stolen car key?

Yes. Report it and keep the crime reference number. It creates an official record that your insurer may ask for.

Will my car insurance pay for new keys?

It depends on your policy. Some include key cover, some offer it as an add-on, and some exclude it. Check your documents and report the theft promptly.

What ID does a locksmith need for a stolen-key job?

The V5C logbook and photo ID, checked before work begins. This is standard practice because programming creates a working key for the vehicle.
